Coleman Griffith Architect, founder of Open 2 studio is a California licensed architect who provides services to clients in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. His architectural practice explores the ephemeral and sensory impact of light in space in the environments he designs. Over the past four years he has designed and built residential and landscape design projects in both Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. His work explores space through the use of light. He sees architecture as a unique artistic endeavor that operates within the parameters of his clients physical, emotional and experiential needs.
Born in Washington DC., to Cynthia Littlefield, a fine art painter and Coleman Griffith Sr. a civil engineer. He grew up in the cosmopolitan suburbs of Northern Virginia prior to going to study architecture at The Catholic University of America in Washington DC. After receiving his bachelor's degree, Coleman was awarded a full academic scholarship from the Ohio State University to the Graduate School of Architecture. There he studied architecture, art history and painting. After graduate school, he moved to San Antonio Texas for six years, where he lived, worked and received his first professional license in architecture. In 1988 he moved to Los Angeles County working as a senior architectural designer and director of design at several area architectural firms until he received his California state architectural license in 1989. Shortly afterwards he re entered architectural education and in 1993 was hired as a full time professor to head the architecture department at Pasadena City College. After retiring in 2015 from full-time education, Coleman remains actively involved in both architectural and the artistic communities of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. He is a member of the Westmont Executive Arts Council and the Abstract Arts Collective in Santa Barbara. He regularly attends Art openings in both cities each week. He is a regular guest reviewer or ‘juror’ of student architectural projects in Los Angeles area University programs, including USC, Otis College of Art and Design, Woodbury University Berlin study abroad program and Cal State Pomona. |
